Renovating an old Homesite

My group renovated the foundation of an old homesite in Cedar Falls Park, Chapel Hill.  We dug out a pile of glass, rocks, and briars and turned a real eyesore into a historic site along a hiking trail.  We found 10  one hundred year old glass marbles that kids used to play with who lived in the house, an old toy airplane, and…See More

CEDAR FALLS IS ROCKING IN CHAPEL HILL

Thanks to a bunch of boyscouts and other teen volunteers, Cedar Falls Park has its hiking trails marked appropriately. We pulled out 26 old posts and remarked the trails with Rhino marking system.  It looks great.  You can drive a Mack Truck over the sign posts, and they still stand straight and mighty.  The posts were pulled out using a lever system and physics  - an 8 foot post as a lever, 3 small cinder blocks as a fulcrum and a board to catch the lip of the post.  These posts had been in…See More

Pesticides

Pesticides are killing the bees and affecting many other species negatively, yet if we stop them, because of increased monoculture, specific grain pests would ravage the fields and eat everything in sight. Food would not be capable os sustainably being grown. So then, the question becomes, how do we stop the bee deaths and continue the successful farming without pesticides agriculture relies upon?See More

People's Climate March

People's Climate MarchSeptember 21st,I pull on my cap and volunteer shirt, walk to Columbus Circle Subway Station, all while simultaneously yawning. It's 7:30 in the morning. I'm already on duty. As I gaze around, I glimpse passerby in absurd and fascinating costumes. A man or a sun, a man-sun strolls along. Someone with a pointed warlock hat- not really sure what he was supposed to be.People are already here, committed to the act of defying climate change. The day progresses, my arms ache from…See More

CCD of Honey Bees

CCD of Honey BeesColony Collapse Disorder among the Honey Bees is no longer a worry of the past. It is a legitimate concern among environmentalists and researchers. Why are the colonies being lost? This is the ultimate question that must be addressed. If we ignore the increasing death of bees, we may threaten the cultivation of various foods, flowers, jeopardizing the sustenance all creatures depend on. Not only to honey bees make honey, but they pollinate fruits, vegetables, and various…See More
