I think that this quote is talking not just about an individual person but about society. If no one contributed to our society, it would die. You contribute to someone, and some else contributes to you. We contribute and shape other people, and other people do the same for us. Thats how we become who we are, but if no one contributed to anyone else, we wouldn't be who we are.

I think this quote by eleanor roosevelt means that the time you spend helping other people comes back around. if you dont make a contribution for those other than yourself, you wont receive the benefit from others. You begin to deteriorate inside because no one is helping/assisting to your needs. What goes around, comes around
